Places of the Soul follows Qatari filmmaker, Hamida, on an environmental expedition to Antarctica, whilst traveling into the world of her past inherited from her mother’s videotapes. She ventures on a quest for her identity in Qatar’s nature and oral heritage. The juxtaposition of two landscapes - the ice desert of Antarctica and the sand desert of Qatar, is an exploration of duality, of modernity and tradition, and nature and civilization. The film is a love letter to the filmmaker’s mother, Mother Nature, and her motherland.
