Director Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel hails from a distinguished cinematic lineage---he is the grandson of Ingmar Bergman and actress Liv Ullmann. In Armand, his debut feature, he unveils a troubling truth that unfolds behind closed doors, where the complexities of familial relationships come to the fore. The story begins when Elisabeth is called to her son's school to confront allegations, triggering a cascade of mutual accusations between parents and teachers. The film and its script echo the traditions of Scandinavian bourgeois theatre, steeped in hypocrisy, irony, and manipulation. Tøndel masterfully turns a school crisis into a psychological portrait of a mother nearing collapse.
Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel studied directing at Westerdals School of Arts. His debut short Bird Hearts (2015) premiered at Karlovy Vary, won the Golden Chair at Grimstad, and was nominated for an Amanda award. His 2017 short Fanny premiered in Aspen, also earned an Amanda nomination, and both films were listed among Cineuropa's best European shorts. In 2024, his debut feature Armand, starring Renate Reinsve and Ellen Dorrit Petersen, will premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. The film has already been sold internationally and is set for release in 2024/2025.
