Director Sarah Friedland began writing shortly after her grandmother's death from dementia and while working as a caregiver for artists with memory loss. This led to the birth of Familiar Touch, filmed in collaboration with a California care home, with staff and residents participating as cast and crew. The film is crafted with precision and sensitivity by a director who deeply understands her subject and has the tools to express it in a moving way. This is not a sad story about losing memory, but an intimate and honest glimpse into one woman's journey---and how we somehow find ourselves again.
Sarah Friedland is a filmmaker and choreographer who works with both dance and film. She creates experimental films, video installations, and live performances where the camera and the body move together to explore how we live, move, and relate to each other. Her work is based on real movements from everyday life, memories, old videos, and different dance styles. She often works with many types of people---from professional dancers to teenagers and older adults---using interviews, re-enactments, and improvisation to shape her pieces. In 2024, her first feature film Familiar Touch premiered at Venice and won two major awards.
