In 1994 Azemmour, Southeast Morocco, 17-year-old Fatine finds herself at a crossroads. She lives with her mother Nadia, a proud chikha a performer of the traditional Aïta, and her grandfather Hamid, in a home rich with artistic legacy. With her baccalaureate in hand and a future wide open, Fatine is torn between the pull of her family's defiant musical tradition and the promise of a quieter life with her lover, Youssef. As tensions rise, Fatine must confront what freedom, love, and legacy truly mean.
Born in 1983 in Casablanca, Ayoub Layoussifi is an actor, writer, and director. Trained in France, he works across both documentary and fiction. His short film Tikitat-A-Soulima received international acclaim. He also teaches cinema and theatre in the Paris region and at 3iS. Born in Brussels in 1980 to Moroccan parents, Zahoua discovered photography early. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, she worked in film before traveling the world capturing portraits. Fascinated by Chikhates, her research and interviews inspired her to write the story of Fatine.
