It’s the winter of 2013. Cairo is restless as people go through the liminal aftermath of the 2011 uprising. Under a strict curfew, Nour dares to go out on a date with Figo in the only place where privacy is afforded in the city: the car. Together, they drive through the bustling streets of the city. As her curfew approaches, Figo takes Nour to a scenic overlook - a classic makeout spot - where Nour discovers that a girl is never safe in an unhinged Cairo, and that the simple freedoms afforded to many girls, might be perilous for an Egyptian girl.

Ali was the President of the Direction Jury at London’s D&AD Awards in 2020, a member of the Film Jury at Cannes Lions International Festival in 2023, and was named one of Ten Most Influential Advertising Directors in the World Today by Adweek and the Gunn Report. “Smokey Eyes” is his first film.
